Dangerous abortion scheme spreading

May 26, 2010

Operation Rescue has discovered that telemed abortions (see related article) are being used in Iowa, so the state board of medicine is planning an investigation to determine if the method is legal. Operation Rescue spokesperson Cheryl Sullinger says the fact that the practice is spreading elsewhere is troubling because it can be dangerous.

"No physician is on site [at the abortion clinic] to examine a woman at any time," she reports. "It's done through a teleconferencing hook-up. The abortionist asks the woman a few questions, pushes a button, a drawer opens, the abortion pill pops out, and she's sent on her way."

Cheryl Sullinger (Operation Rescue)If the woman or girl experiences problems with the procedure, she is left on her own to find a physician to treat her. Meanwhile, some of those possible problems are known to be deadly.

Sullinger goes on to explain that one of the reasons why Planned Parenthood is working to expand telemed abortions is because "they don't have enough licensed physicians; they don't have enough abortionists to staff their clinics, and they think that teleconferencing [and] dispensing pills over the Internet is the way to solve their financial problems."

The Operation Rescue spokesperson recommends that state lawmakers take a look at laws on the books, and then take the necessary steps to ban telemed abortions in their home states.
