Easter: the real “hope and change” message

Apr 2, 2010

After two years of political talk about “hope” and “change,” this Easter weekend is a good time to reflect on the real hope and the real change offered by Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 11:1 tells us that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” In other words, hope without faith is hope without substance. Hope with faith, or hope through faith is the very heart of the Gospel: we are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, not by anything that we or any other man or woman can offer. That hope is for life everlasting. It does not fade.

When we accept the gift of salvation through faith in Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross, which we commemorate today on Good Friday, then we are reborn – the greatest “change” that mortals can experience. As Paul puts in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! ...”

Easter reminds us that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to us, to turn us into totally new creations. On this Easter morning, which is forecast to be a glorious day in terms of weather throughout Pennsylvania, let us not forget to extend to our neighbors the promise of true glory, true change and true hope through faith in our risen Savior.
