Iowa fights for public vote

Jan 4, 2010

Iowa residents are letting lawmakers know how they feel about the legalization of homosexual marriage by the state Supreme Court, and the issue is expected to be a major battleground in 2010.

"We expect to be able to exercise our constitutional right to vote, and we also expect that our elected representatives won't stand in our way," English states, warning that "any elected representative who stands between the people of Iowa and their constitutional right to vote on the definition of marriage is risking their political future."

English is hopeful for a positive outcome. "There's an election coming up next November," he reports. "These folks are standing for election, and the people of Iowa are not impressed with the way [lawmakers] handled this issue last session."

Neither the legislature nor the governor would take action to put the issue on the ballot and overturn the state Supreme Court's decision from the last legislative session.
